Classic Ford Magazine

Photography designed for publication, not just social media.

Photographing a feature for one of the UK's best-known classic car magazines required far more than taking great photographs. Every image had to be planned around editorial layouts, magazine design and storytelling, giving the editorial team maximum flexibility while increasing the chances of securing a cover feature.

Photographing for editorial publication means understanding both photography and publication design. Every composition, angle and crop must work alongside headlines, text, pull quotes and page layouts without compromising the impact of the image itself.

Working closely with the vehicle owner and understanding how automotive magazines present their features, the shoot was carefully planned to produce a complete library of images capable of supporting everything from a front cover to a multi-page feature.

Understanding The Brief

Great editorial photography starts before the camera comes out.

Unlike social media photography, magazine photography has to work within a carefully designed publication. Before planning the shoot, I researched previous editions of Classic Ford Magazine to understand how feature cars were presented throughout the magazine.

That research shaped every decision during the shoot.

Cover images needed space for the magazine masthead and cover lines. Feature openers required strong landscape compositions with room for large headlines, while supporting images needed to work alongside columns of editorial copy.

Rather than simply photographing the car from attractive angles, every photograph was created with its final purpose already in mind.

Planning The Perfect Shot

Every composition was designed to give the editor options.

Successful editorial photography isn't about producing one perfect image. It's about producing an entire collection that works together.

Throughout the day we deliberately captured a mixture of wide establishing shots, detailed close-ups, portrait orientation images and dramatic landscape compositions.

Extra space was intentionally left around certain photographs to allow designers flexibility when positioning headlines, pull quotes and page layouts without obscuring important parts of the vehicle.

By planning the shoot around the publication rather than simply the subject, every image became far more useful to the editorial team.

Creating A Complete Editorial Library

One shoot. Multiple stories.

The final image collection was designed to support every part of the feature article.

Alongside hero photographs of the finished Escort, we photographed:

  • Exterior details
  • Interior features
  • Engine bay
  • Mechanical upgrades
  • Owner portraits
  • Supporting documentary images

Each photograph played a specific role within the final publication, giving the editor everything needed to tell the complete story across multiple pages.

Rather than relying on a handful of strong images, the project delivered a complete editorial library ready for publication.

04

Explore the Project

The published feature demonstrates how planning photography around its final use produces stronger editorial results. From the front cover through to the feature spreads, every photograph was captured with layout, storytelling and publication design in mind.

05

The Outcome

Photography that helped tell a story.

The completed feature appeared throughout Classic Ford Magazine, including the front cover, contents page and an extensive multi-page editorial.

By understanding how magazines are designed before the first photograph was taken, the final images gave the editorial team the flexibility to build engaging layouts while showcasing the vehicle at its very best.

For the vehicle owner, the feature documented years of engineering and craftsmanship. For the magazine, it provided a compelling story supported by photography that worked seamlessly across every page.

The result demonstrates how thoughtful commercial photography extends beyond creating beautiful images, it becomes an essential part of visual storytelling.

Photography Insight

Great editorial photography isn't created in Photoshop or during layout. It's created before the shutter is pressed.

Understanding where photographs will eventually be used allows every composition to be planned with purpose. By leaving space for headlines, capturing multiple orientations and thinking beyond individual images, the final collection becomes far more valuable to designers, editors and publishers.
